Plant Tissue Samples

Enclose the root system in a plastic bag and seal it at the base of the plant stem to prevent soil spillage. Then enclose the entire plant in another plastic bag and seal. Please label each sample with a name you can identify them by. Fill out and include the Sample Submission Form below. For additional information regarding collecting and submitting plant, please contact us.

Samples submitted may be individual samples or compound samples. If submitting compound samples collect tissue material from various locations throughout the area of interest. Do not collect leaves/tissue samples that are dead, damaged by insects or mechanically injured. Submit a sufficient amount of material for testing. A single plant sample may not be enough to allow a correct diagnosis of the problem. If possible, select samples with various stages of disease development (early and late stages). When the entire plant cannot be shipped, or submitted, collect the largest plant sample possible, or portions of each major plant organ (roots, stems, leaves, flowers).

For leaf/fruit diseases, submit leaves/fruits showing various stages of infection. For lawn and turf diseases, submit a 3-4” diameter plug that is 2-3” in depth taken where the healthy and diseased areas meet. Include roots and the adhering soil. Branch specimens (8–12” long) should include the diseased area and part of the healthy area.

Soil and Water Samples

Soil samples can be sent in sandwich sized Ziploc bags (approximately 500 g of soil is required). If multiple samples are submitted, please seat with tape in order to prevent mixing of samples during shipping. Water samples may be sent in water bottles or similar containers (100-150 mL). Please seal the tops in order to reduce the likelihood of leaks. Please label each sample with a name you can identify them by. Fill out and include the Sample Submission Form below. For additional information regarding collecting and submitting plant, please contact us.

If a general test of an area is requested, you may collect samples from various locations and submit a single sample. This will yield results for the area collected. If specific locations are to be tested, individual samples will be needed.
